As the assistant manager of a well-patronized and money-making comic book store I have seen the effects that the British Invasion has had on comics. With my greater than thirty years love affair with comics, I have studied and collected the writings of comic writers from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. All you need to know reader, is that I know all there is to know about American writers and UK writers.

British writers are trying to ruin American comics because they are jealous. This is the truth!

Americans invented comics. Everyone knows this. What everyone doesn’t know is the British agenda regarding comics. The British have been trying to infiltrate comics and every year they gain a stronger foothold. When the average comics reader is asked about British writers, they immediately think of innovative stories from skewed perspectives as the hallmark of the British writer. This could not be further from the truth. Here are a few examples of how British writers are only doing what Americans writers have done for many years.

Warren Ellis: This writer is often credited with the “incredible” presentation of homosexuals in comic books with his characters Midnighter and Apollo. This is nothing new, people! Scott Lobdell introduced a gay super-hero into a mainstream story way back in Alpha Flight #106, where the valiant Northstar reveals his sexual preferences while saving the life of an infant. Let us also not forget what Marv Wolfman and George Perez did with the homosexual character Jericho from Teen Titans. As a side note, it was recently brought to my attention that my debut column was posted on Warren Ellis’ forum. Ellis was, in my opinion, trying to drum up hits to his forum by using my name. For shame, sir!

Garth Ennis: This rowdy Irish writer is well known for what he has done with Punisher. What everyone seems to be forgetting is that Punisher was created by Gerry Conway, a good American writer. We don’t need Ennis or UK writers to give us a gun-toting anti-hero, Conway gave us Punisher in 1974. Ennis is writing what an American writer already wrote twenty seven years ago!

Grant Morrison: This Scottish writer was not satisfied with altering a beloved member of the Forgotten Heroes, Doom Patrol and the Justice League of America; now he is mucking up the New X-Men, for goodness sake! Where is Wolverine’s costume? Why isn’t Phoenix in her green and gold costume? Where is Corsair? These are questions I would not have to ask if a competent American writer where in charge of the New X-Men. I was saddened to hear that the new Justice League animated series will be partly modeled after Morrison’s Justice League, rather than the team originally presented in Brave and the Bold #28.

Alan Moore: This British writer at least has, recently, had the decency to stay away from American (super-hero) comics. Though, in trying to keep away from American comics, Moore has created a highly suspect line of super-heroes lite, which he calls, science-heroes. I find it very insulting that Moore called the esteemed Dr. William Moulton Marston, who under the pseudonym Charles Moulton created Wonder Woman and was also the inventor of the lie detector, a, “barely suppressed psycho-sexual maniac.” Yet Moore goes on to create a blatant Wonder Woman rip-off with Promethea. An issue of Promethea entitled Sex, Stars and Serpents actually won an Eisner award this year. Who is the sexual maniac now?

It should be obvious to all who read this that UK writers are destroying our American archetypes for their own amusement and because of their profound jealousy. The British could not come up with comics on their own, now they want to show us how to do comics? They want to show us new versions and more diverse characters? They want to breathe new life into what they consider tired old concepts? They want to remind us how cool comics can be? They want to push the envelope of super-hero comics? How dare they! I, and I am sure most of the comics community, do not want this.

Give us back our old comics! That’s how we made them; that’s how we want them to stay!
