"Total Abandon"

Writer: Mark Schultz
Artists: Doug Mahnke(p), Dustin Nguyen(i)
Publisher: DC

Plot: Here, plot, plot, plot, plot, plot. Guess it's not coming.

I don't know what the heck is going on in the last issue I'll be buying of Superman: Man of Steel. Cosmos, if DC keeps this up, I'll be saying "make mine Marvel" soon, and given my history, that's something almost of which unheard.

Let's see, Maxima and the aliens are in a snit because the earth seemed to attack Apokolips. You would think with Apokolips being planet of evil and all that this attack would actually place earth higher in their favor, but I've long ago abandoned hope that a Superman plot in the continuity titles will make sense.

Maxima by the way dies. Don't ask me how. I could have sworn her body's invulnerable, but she pulls a Janeway in yet another Star Trek rip-off. Did DC ask Wildstorm to purchase the rights to Star Trek just so they could legally rip-off the various series? Their exploitation is equal to that of a Ferengi with gold fever time-warped back to old California. Anywho, Maxima rams her ship into something important, and for some reason she doesn't survive. Perhaps, DC is gradually committing suicide? One character at time.

Superman faces Braniac. Luthor confronts Lena, but I don't give a rat's behind since these characters bear the complexity of a George W. Bush conversation. By the way during the second confrontation, the book has the audacity to steal from Star Trek yet again. Luthor reminds Lena of the Spock philosophy from Wrath of Khan: "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one." Has DC no shame? Scratch that. I know they haven't any shame. If they had shame, they would admit that their current universe sucks and split up the earths. Do I sound like a broken record? At least they're my tracks. The line in Wrath of Khan brings the drama of Spock's sacrifice home. The line spoken in Man of Steel doesn't need to be there, conveys no poignancy and has no weight given the hollowness of these characters.

Just when you believe events can't possibly get more jaw-droppingly stupid. Wonder Woman has the Amazons transport Paradise Island into space to block some sort of death-ray. I guess when they rebooted the entirety of the DCU, they forgot to slip in asteroids that Green Lantern could have teleported to serve as obstacles. I wonder if Phil Jiminez knew DC intended to destroy Paradise Island in such a dumbass fashion? He seemed to have lots of plans for the Amazons. Oh, well.

Steel's back, and he's sporting just a simply, spectacular new set of threads. "I'm too sexy for my shirt...." Walk down the runway, you black stallion, you. Work those hips. Mmmmn, hmmmn. Twirl, and back down the runway. You go, girlfriend!

Right. In summary so far the sole purpose of "Our Worlds at War" was to fashion a suit with an abandoned Galactus design, mass market that suit to an unwelcoming crowd, spotlight the battle armor both Wonder Women possess, show off Lena Luthor's new jumpsuit, try to get Superman to wear an ugly suit, succeed in having Steel wear that suit. Is it just me or has DC abandoned comic books and entered the fashion industry?
