Review: Whore

A comic review article by: Jason Sacks

Jacob Mars is a secret agent with a bit of a problem: he can't retire. Just as Mars tries to get away from the spy biz, he gets dragged right back in to the game: he's hired as a freelancer tasked to sleep with a Saudi heiress, work the Westminster Dog Show and keep the secret of a teen idol's sexual preference among other tasks. Not that Jacob minds that he can't retire. He can make good money as a freelance spy, which he needs to pay his three alimonies. Plus Mars gets all the pussy he wants and even gets to play basketball with Barack Obama.

Yeah, this is a pretty much full-out action-packed violent and sexy spy comic. There's a bunch of nasty violence and some pretty kinky sex, sometimes with both things mixed together. Jacob Mars is a whore in most every possible, and as far as Mars is concerned ain't nothing wrong with that life. He's a rogue, a trouble-maker, a James Bond without morals, and the most important thing is to stay out of his goddamn way, lest you get shot or your daughter get screwed by the man, or both.

Jeff Kaufman delivers a story that's deliberately over-the-top, filled with all kinds of wrong and just a little bit of right. This book is pure, straight-up (yes indeed) man-sized action, complete with some women who can pretty much keep up to speed with our leading man. You have to be a little bit patient to enjoy the absurd over-the-top breakneck silliness of this book, but if you can look past some of the more exploitative elements, which feel as satirical as they do serious, you'll have a lot of fun with this book.

Marco Turini's art is gorgeous in this book. He clearly knows how to draw many different types of beautiful women, as Mars gets a chance to spend time in bed with women of all kinds of personalities. Turini's people look unique compared to each other, and seem to jump right from real life onto the page. You've probably seen these scenes many times before in movies, but Turini captures those movie scenes well and keeps you wanting to eat more popcorn.

Whore won't win any Eisner Awards, but it's a slick, fun, fast paced action adventure yarn with a sense of humor.
