"Doing More"
Writer: Daniel Way
Artists: Steve Scott (p), Kris Justice (i), Lee Louridge (colors)
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Steve Scott brings energy to the pencils of his first Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four. He balances vigorous scenes of clobbering with quieter character moments from the super-hero fan's favorite family.
Kris Justice's inks give the pencils a creamy quality that washes over the proportionate cast, save for Ben who looks sufficiently craggy. Justice and Lee Louridge evoke the texture of hair and rock, but Louridge bugs the heck out of me by repeating the same mistakes made by other colorists. Sue and Johnny are blonde. So why do they have black eyebrows?
Way's story is well plotted. We join the FF as they battle some Alex Toth inspired monsters to save an alien species. Reed's given the gift of a small unknown element. Johnny has a problem with taking off for "strange, new worlds" when the common citizen is getting robbed, and an old, thoroughly enjoyable FF classic foe appears to wreak havoc.
I'm not sure the old Green Arrow argument works with Johnny's character, but Way more than compensates for the preaching with a fun counter-argument that works explosively in the FF's favor. Some of the flow to the story could be a little better, but on the whole, I don't have a lot to complain about. Good artwork, good story, good character interaction and in the case of the villain hilarious dialogue equals good comic book.
