Ian Boothby does it again! Starting off with something completely unrelated to the main plot, he alludes to the heroism and bond shared between Bart and his grandfather that was introduced in the tontine episode of the series. He then uses that display, which in itself is pretty cool, to swing the main plot back to the inconsequential element. Convoluted says you. The watchword for the series and Simpsons Comics.
Creating waves within the plot, Mr. Boothby brings in chaos theory taken beyond the extreme. The element makes America's one-time adversaries actually noble bearers of a thankless onus. Laziness however conquers all.
Ingenuity saves the day. The absurd but in hindsight useful addition of a second steering wheel saves the Sea Captain's life. Professor Frink whose appearance at first seems like a throwaway gag becomes a means for survival, and this time Springfield's rash and prevalent stupidity does not play a factor in either creating the impending doom or impeding the heroic rescue. The whole town in fact seems to know more about entomology than the layperson.
While saddled with a full complement of yellow, four-fingered denizens, Phil Ortiz still manages to distinguish each character through his or her body language and behavior. The supporting cast never blend into the background, nor do they clutter the panels or steal the spotlight away from Bart and Abe.
Funny, even dramatic, this issue of Simpsons Comics which features quick sight-gags galore and longer paced jokes based upon characterization is a winner.
