Mark Waid anticipates my single caveat from last issue. It seems Reed is innocent of my assumption of an invention turned criminal. He did anticipate the contingencies, and identity of the true unwitting culprit makes sense.
The menace has a reason to attack and divide the quartet, and will somebody kindly strong arm Access to shunt Reed to the DC universe. It seems that yes, he has the technology to heal Sue's hand which pretty much seemed likely to vanish forever. This man could easily find a way to mend Babs' spine.
The Johnny Storm subplot while an interruption is ably pulled into the main plot, and the way in which the creature tries to thwart him is ingenious. His survival while expected isn't at all unlikely since ironically he's probably the only person in the world who could survive such an event.
Mike Wieringo is known more for his fantasy, light-hearted work, and while Mr. Waid does give him plenty of opportunity to ply his typical trade during the subplot, Wieringo surprisingly gives his all for the scientific horror aspect of the beast, continues to have Sue pour out believable expressions of pain and fear. Ben gets a rare scene of caring instead of clobbering, and Reed has one of the most odd Sergio Leone moments I've seen.
