The first story deals with the obsession that General Ross has with the Hulk and anything Hulk related. The artwork is very abstract and I am not too much of a fan of this kind of artwork, it's sort of distracting and I expect a company like Vertigo to do this. There is plenty of good action and I love the way the government is portrayed, they carefully dispose of any evidence to the events. I got a kick out of the way the Hulk breaks out of a truck with ease. Get ready for some Hulk spray with this story!
The next story is called 'Dear Thor' and I must say it was very touching. Thor is seen in many incredible feats of heroism and his #1 fan Elise Erikson writes him throughout her life from age 6 until the time when she dies. Her name changes to Elise Smith when she gets married and she seems quite happy with her life at that point of time. Her letters are heart felt and touching and describe how Thor saved her life and her family's lives, how he is a savior and hero to many; she goes on to describe Thor as a role-model, how she had a crush on him; then another letter she talks of her wonderful marriage and her move to Chicago from Indiana, later Thor gets a hard edged letter in which Elise describes being physically abused by her husband and how her son Zachary died.
The last letter she writes from her death bed, as she is bedridden with cancer. Thor's immortality is thrown into perspective in this story as Thor bears witness of a mere mortal girl who grows up in a life filled with ups and downs and finally to her death. Thor is seen at her death bed. A very touching story that ends with a positive note, when Thor receives a letter from her daughter Mia Erikson - age 6. At times it is a great burden when you are in a position and you touch so many lives. This is the life of one. Elise Erikson. Powerful story done uniquely well with gorgeous drawings and the letters shown in their entirety on each page.
