Spaceman may not be an alcoholic, nor prone to speaking in profanity. He may not be cynical or psychotic. He may not enjoy anal sex--"Sweet Christmas!"--nor be permanently crippled. Spaceman never the less succeeds without being "cutting edge."
Spaceman smiles and knocks politely before entering a domicile. He's interested in good clean fun like playing catch, and above all else, he's concerned with doing the right thing. In short, Spaceman is quite the hero, and his second appearance makes an impressive splash.
For the writing, Mr. Allred let's the reader quickly get to know the main character then allows his own curiosity to follow the hero into what amounts to a lost sixties Hanna-Barbera adventure cartoon. The toon's plot is based upon a friendly pulp science fiction staple, and the artwork and the smoothness of writing compel to you tread a well worn path.
Clearly inspired by Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace Ghoooooooooooooooost, the depiction of Spaceman is unlike Mr. Allred's previous work in that he maintains the feeling of a cartoon by superimposing his images on painted backgrounds done in lighter colors by Lawrence Marvit. Laura Allred must be mentioned for making Spaceman a clash of colors that she never the less teases into aesthetic teamwork.
