Oh My Goddess! Banpei In Love #1

"Banpei in Love, Part I of II"

Writer/Artist: Kosuke Fujishima

Publisher: Dark Horse

Plot:
What you need to know - Keiichi Morisato is a college student who has managed somehow to summon the first class goddess Belldandy, and her two second class goddess sisters, Urd and Skuld. Skuld is a bit of a boffin, and she builds a little robot to be a household servant - the robot is called Banpei. And it falls in love. Hence "Banpei in Love".

Comments:
The issue kicks off with Skuld riding Banpei in bike mode in a desperate rush to get to the PC store before it shuts - an accident in front of a convenience store puts Banpei face to face with an automated greeting robot - a circuit trips, a spark occurs where it shouldn't, and bingo!

Banpei disappears the next day, to hang around the robot's feet - when, in a classic sequence, it malfunctions and its owner comes out and has to remove a panel or two to get it working...Banpei's expression as the body is exposed is a joy. This is developed further a little later on after Banpei has run off with the robot (taking it out on a date, of course) and one of the goddesses has to stand in to prevent the theft being discovered. Of course, she gets the words wrong and needs to have a panel removed to get her working again...

It should all end in tears next issue as the robot does nothing except say "Welcome, Thank You For Coming" and give a little bow - although Banpei can maneuver his face into the way so the bow acts as a kiss, the robot doesn't react to him...poor Banpei.

The art fits the storyline well, the only complaint is that it is over far too quickly and I can't wait for the conclusion in #2.

Final Word:
An excellent introductory piece to the wacky world of Oh My Goddess!, and as it is just a two-part story you don't have to commit a lot of money to find out the conclusion. Recommended.
