PIXEL COUNT: Video Game News Roundup for November 9th, 2011

A game news article

Happy Hump Day, gamers! I know many of you are in the throws of fictitiously modern warfare right now, but take a break, let your eyes adjust and read s bit of the video game news that has popped up on the Interweb while some twelve-year-old was tea-bagging your digital corpse.

Here is another edition of Comics Bulletin's video game news roundup that we gave a pun for a title called...

3D Remake of A Link to the Past in the works?

With games like Kid Icarus: Uprising coming up and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D being a huge success, it would be expected that the folks over at Nintendo are planning to give 3D updates to more of their classic franchises. Well, we might definitely get some more.

In an interview with Games Radar, the producer of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword -- Eiji Aonuma -- alluded to the great Shigeru Miyamoto is toying with the idea of taking an old 2D Zelda title and remaking it in 3D. Aonuma said:

"Well actually, even Mr. Miyamoto himself has been talking recently about going back to the 2D Zelda games, in particular the ones that were designed with multiple levels to the world like A Link to the Past, and taking those 2D graphics and recreating them in 3D so that you could get a sense for the depth of those worlds. That's something that might be interesting to do, so I would say there might be a possibility of something like that in the future."

Now, this is far from an announcement or a confirmation, it is an interesting idea. And pretty much anything that Miyamoto touches has an abundance of redeemable qualities, so it will be worth a play. I'm excited to see what this could become.

Limited Edition Zelda 3DS Looks So Pretty

In honor of the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo is releasing a limited edition Zelda 3DS that will be bundled with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. It looks so very pretty!

Of course, it is only announced for Europe right now. Fucking Europeans!

Saints Row: The Third to be Packaged with an Online Pass

As so many games have been doing in the last year, THQ will be packaging an online pass into every copy of everyone's future favorite game this year, Saints Row: The Third.

The online pass will be required to specifically play the game's co-op and horde modes.

Personally, I hate online passes because it punishes those who are buying the game new and have to download a portion of the game that should have already been in the physical product. When I had to download the Catwoman levels for Batman: Arkham City, I was pissed. This was a portion of the game that Warner Bros. was saying was an imperative piece of the game and I had to fucking download it. Then, after I did so, the first scene is a Catwoman scene! That's how important it was! It opens the fucking game!

Before I start ranting, online passes punish the wrong people. That said, I can't wait for this game!

Did they just announce Saints Row 4 before The Third is even out? Son of a...

In an interview with Blair Herter on X-Play, THQ's Danny Bilson said that they are already at work on Saints Row 4 and that "it is wilder than [Saints Row: The Third]".

I hate it when developers/publishers do this! The current title isn't even out yet and you are already saying that you are working on the next one. To me, that means you will not be working on DLC for the title whatsoever. And since THQ had announced that a year's worth of DLC would be coming out for the game, it makes me feel as if they are just choosing to release content that should have already been in the title late.

That said, I cannot wait for Saints Row: The Third!

Batman: Arkham City PC Delayed Until November 22

No love for all you PC gamers. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that the Dark Knight won't be showing up on your desktop until a week after the announced date.

For those of you eagerly awaiting, the new date will be November 22 (rather than November 15).

I suppose you could always watch your console friends play the game for another week...

Rejoice! The Simpsons Arcade is FINALLY Getting Released on XBLA!

Xbox LIVE Arcade has done a great job of re-releasing many great co-op games of past. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade, X-Men Arcade, Doom, etc. have all been reintroduced to gamers in recent years to much acclaim from fanboys everywhere. But there has always been one game that I have been asking for for years. That game is The Simpsons Arcade. Well, I may finally be getting my wish!

The Australian Ratings Board just recently rated an XBLA release of everyone's favorite arcade game by developers Backbone Entertainment -- the team behind there-released X-Men Arcade and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade games on Xbox LIVE.

I remember being seven and -- while my family was lobbing heavy black balls at white pins -- dropping countless quarters into an arcade cabinet so I could play as Bart Simpson and rescue Maggie from Smithers and Mr. Burns.

There has been no official announcement and, therefore, no release date. But I will have my quarters ready. Wait, I won't need the quarters this time? Sweet deal!

World of Warcraft Subscriptions Have Dropped by 800k

We all knew it was going to eventually happen. Why wouldn't it? It happened to EverQuest. The economy still isn't too great. DC Universe Online became free-to-play. Plus, who isn't looking forward to this year's Star Wars: The Old Republic? Well, ladies and gents, it is finally happening.

In the last three months, Blizzard's extremely popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft, has gone from 11.1 million users to 10.3 million users. That is an 800,000 member drop off in just a quarter of a year! That may not be such a grand number in comparison to the number of users, but it is still a significant drop. And this is off the heels of Blizzcon, where the team announced a new expansion.

I wonder what their numbers will look like after the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic...

Total Recall MMO Coming Next Year?

SEE Games will be publishing a tie-in game for the upcoming Total Remake. Oh, my apologies. I meant Total Recall. How clumsy of me!

The upcoming game will be a browser-based MMO/social game that will have both player-vs-player and player-vs-environment and will deliver console-like graphics.

No word on a release window, but you can bet it will be sometime around the release of the movie.

Release Date for Star Trek Online's Free-to-Play

Cryptic Studios announced quite a while ago that their licensed MMO, Star Trek Online, would be going the free-to-play route, but never gave a window for when that was happening. Now, we have a date: January 17, 2012.

When asked why the change was being made, Cryptic CTO Stephen D'Angelo said, "We've always wanted the game to be free-to-play, in fact we tried to make it free-to-play at the original launch, but [Atari] didn't want us doing that so we didn't do that."

Well, Atari had a change of heart (or realized that no one wanted to pay their subscription fees any longer). As someone who wanted to play this game (but didn't want to pay the monthly subscription), I will definitely be checking this out. I've wanted to command a starship since I was 3!

Adam Sessler Talks Assassin's Creed Flick and A New Kind of Control

Ubisoft keeping control of their intellectual property like this could mean that this movie won't suck! If only Nintendo had done this with Super Mario Bros. Oh, what could have been, Bob Hoskins...

Child's PlayThe last thing I wanted to let you all know was that the Child's Play charity has just kicked off its annual Holiday Season! Child's Play -- from the creators of the Penny Arcade webcomic -- is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of sick and hospitalized children with video games and toys in over 70 hospitals around the world. Since 2003, millions of dollars have been donated and used to help these kids have fun rather than just sit in a hospital room.

Child's Play works in two way: You can click on a hospital on the Child's Play donation page and pick a gift to donate from the wish list or make a cash donation through PayPal -- which Child's Play uses to buy video games, consoles, toys, books and other fun stuff for kids throughout the year.

It is a great cause and if you would care to donate, please go to the site and make a kid a little bit happier this holiday season.

Thank you.

OK, I have to get back to playing DC Universe Online (which is AWESOME, by the way). Until next time...

Nick Boisson grew up on television, Woody Allen, video games, Hardy Boys mysteries and DC comic books, with the occasional Spider-Man issue thrown in for good measure. He currently roams the rainy streets of Miami, Florida, looking for a nice tie, a woman that gets him, and the windbreaker he lost when he was eight. He sometimes writes things down on Twitter as @nitroslick.
