Press Release

A staple of the self-publishing comics movement of the 90's gets a snazzy new edition - in French.

Kymera Comics, an imprint of the French company Studio Malens, has contracted with Coppervale International to produce a French edition of the book Starchild: Awakenings.

"I still remember when I [first] read Awakenings," says Editor Eric Bufkens, "and telling to myself 'I'm sure a French publisher is going to buy that license since it's so good, but if nobody does then I'll publish it myself one day.' It is still one of my all-time favorite comics to this day. At first I thought we would give it to a translator I know and appreciate, but then I realized there's no way I can let anyone else do it - so I'll be handling the translation myself."

Bufkens is an experienced translator, having previously worked on The Big Book of Grimm and Camelot 3000 (DC Comics), Stray Bullets (El Capitan), The Wizard's Tale (DC Comics), and Obergeist (Image) among many others.

Owen said he's very pleased that Bufkens approached Coppervale with the offer. "We've always had very supportive fans in Europe, and I'm thrilled to be able to present a nice new edition to our French readership. Working with professionals like the team at Studio Malens is always a pleasure, and it's been fun to revisit those early chapters at the same time I'm completing the new material."

Owen, who is currently working on the serialized graphic novella Obscuro for Joe Pruett's Negative Burn anthology, will be providing an all-new cover painting for the Kymera edition, as well as illustrated endpapers and cover flaps. The massive 288 page volume is expected to be released in the Fall of 2005.

Other books in the Kymera Comics line include Steven Grant and Mike Zeck's Damned (which just debuted at Angoleme), and Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise.
