JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE

They do the jobs too dirty for the JLA

Springing from a schism among the World’s Greatest Super-Heroes in JLA #100, JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE is the explosive spinoff team that’s not afraid to cross the lines the JLA won’t! Only Joe Kelly’s action-packed brand of storytelling combined with the combustive art and covers of Doug Mahnke & Tom Nguyen could present this brash new super-team — that made its mega-popular debut in the pages of ACTION COMICS #775 — in its hard-hitting, incendiary glory! JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE is a 12-issue maxiseries that kicks off in July.

Led by Vera Black — sister of the Elite’s controversial original leader, Manchester Black — the Elite features both new and classic heroes, including several current JLA members!

Black hires the no-nonsense government watchdog Al-Sheikh to monitor the Justice League Elite’s every move and keep the team honest. But can this mismatched band of former assassins and disillusioned heroes fight clean when they can’t even get along with one another?

And don’t miss a brand-new printing of ACTION COMICS #775, the issue Wizard Magazine called “Joe Kelly’s greatest work ever!” ACTION COMICS #775 ships on July 8 and features the debut of Manchester Black and the original Elite!

This project is supported by house and trade ads.

THE BOOKS OF MAGICK: LIFE DURING WARTIME

Neil Gaiman’s original character Timothy Hunter, the British boy destined to become the world’s greatest mage and one of VERTIGO’s signature characters, returns — older, cooler and more confident — in the compelling new ongoing series THE BOOKS OF MAGICK: LIFE DURING WARTIME.

Gaiman plots the initial story arc with British television drama writer Si Spencer, who writes the series with Gaiman continuing as consultant. Dean Ormston (LUCIFER, THE SANDMAN) provides moody, evocative art, while fan-favorite Frank Quitely (BITE CLUB covers, THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS, JLA: EARTH TWO) delivers sensational painted covers.

Set ten minutes into the future, in alternate universes where battles on Earth and Faerie overlap, this new take on 19-year-old Tim is loaded with dystopian undercurrents and psychological horror, set against a background of contemporary global politics.

It’s the Tim Hunter we know… or is it? After all, this Tim is living in London, with his mother (who no longer appears to be dead). He’s reunited with his former girlfriend Molly. His best friends are a brother and sister called Cat and Dog — who may make Tim’s life a little too interesting for his own good. It’s a world without even the memory of magic.

Meanwhile, somewhere else, a magical war is in progress. John Constantine and Zatanna are living under seige — and only the legendary Tim Hunter can save them. Don’t miss a free 8-page preview of this great entry point for new readers in this month’s SWAMP THING #5.

This project is supported by a full-color 11” x 34” promo poster, house ads, and a minisite at www.vertigo.com.

THE BOOKS OF MAGICK: LIFE DURING WARTIME is an ongoing VERTIGO series edited by Shelly Bond and is suggested for mature readers. The 32-page issue #1 arrives in comic-book stores July 8 with a cover price of $2.50 U.S.

The F.B.I.’s after a serial killer who brutally rapes and murders his pretty young victims. And his latest target has a special connection to Clevenger: She’s the teenage daughter of the man he killed.

They offer Bloodhound a deal: help them with their case, and he’ll get his 20-year sentence reduced. Will he take their offer or remain behind bars? And if he does go free, how can the F.B.I. control him?

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #12

Things heat up for the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight in SUPERMAN/BATMAN #12, written by Jeph Loeb with stunning art by Michael Turner. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman have traveled to Apokolips to rescue Kara Zor-El…but does she want to be saved? Direct Currents turned to Jeph Loeb for some answers and insights!

Q: What can readers expect in SUPERMAN/BATMAN #12?

A: Things go a little…unexpected. Okay, a lot unexpected. We don't know a whole lot about Kara, and in this issue, we might find out some things we'd rather not.

Q: What made you want to bring back Supergirl?

A: I didn’t bring back anyone! This story is called “The Supergirl from Krypton.” What happens to her in these six issues marks the beginning of a new person in Superman’s life and in the DCU.

Q: What’s it like working with Michael Turner?

A: It’s just fun. We’ve been friends for a long time and see this story very, very similarly. It’s like I write it, and he draws it, and I’m constantly amazed by the results — and also by our colorist supreme Peter Steigerwald and my good luck charm, the ever-crafty Richard Starkings, who are both bringing a look to the book that is pretty spectacular.

Q. In “The Supergirl from Krypton,” you get to write all three of DC’s classic trinity of heroes. Do you have a favorite?

A. They’re all great. I’m honored to play with them — even for a short time.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN is an ongoing series edited by Eddie Berganza. The 32-page issue #12 arrives in comic-book stores July 21 with a cover price of $2.95 U.S.

SEBASTIAN O TRADE PAPERBACK

Long out of print, SEBASTIAN O helped launch VERTIGO and further propelled the career of white-hot comics writer Grant Morrison. Now the 3-issue miniseries, illustrated by Steve Yeowell (THE INVISIBLES), returns in an 80-page trade paperback that includes a new text piece by Morrison and rare developmental drawings by Yeowell.

Telling the story of an iconoclastic, flamboyant assassin in a decadent, high-tech 1890s England, SEBASTIAN O — an early inclusion in the genre now known as “steampunk” — accompanies its jaded hero on the hunt for the mastermind who condemned him to Bedlam for his moral outrages against a computerized Victorian society. Dispatching his foes with well-paced bullets and well-turned phrases, Sebastian tracks down his nemesis through his old associates in the scandalous Club de Paradis Artificiel, whose surviving members have somehow managed to evade the harsh punishment he received. But the closer Sebastian gets to his quarry, the more prophetic the club name seems — and the wilder the quest for truth becomes.
