Press Release
JANUARY 2004: ONE OF EVERY TWO COMICS SOLD ARE PUBLISHED BY MARVEL!
After one full year of leading the industry Market Share of Monthly Units Sold, Marvel begins 2004 with greater than 48% of January Unit Sales and greater than 38% of Dollar share with a powerful January lineup at the beginning of a strong, new year.
Marvel, the #1 publisher of comics in the U.S., also returned to the top 10 in force, maintaining the #1 slot with ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, and securing spots 1 through 9 for the House of Ideas.
"I am very proud of our performance in January. These results say so much, not just about our top titles, but also about all the books, the great staff and creators that make them and the retailers who have given us so much faith and support. This is a great way to start the year,” said Gui Karyo, President, Publishing.
These numbers, on the heels of a strong '03, where Marvel sold 80 of the top 100 comics, also show strong growth from December with an impressive 7% increase in Dollar Share month over month.
The figures above are reported by Diamond Comics Distributors and represent sales by Marvel to comic shop retailers. While Marvel extends its thanks to retailers and to Diamond for their continued support –certainly we’d be nowhere if those cash registers weren’t ringing up Marvel books - we also would like to extend a special thanks to the customers & fans whose demand made January such a huge success.
Said Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada, “This is incredible. I couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved.”
Dan Buckley, Publisher of Marvel Comics, said it best: “We greatly appreciate the devotion of our fans to the Marvel line. All I can say is that we will do our best to keep providing you with the finest in comic book entertainment, throughout 2004 and beyond.”
Thank you, all!
