IDW Publishing To Release Movie Adaptation of Underworld™
Posted: Saturday, June 28 By: Markisan Naso One of the most anticipated films of 2003 has just found another venue to reach an already waiting audience. IDW Publishing, through a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Consumer Products (SPCP), is thrilled to announce that they will be publishing the film adaptation comic book of Lakeshore Entertainment’s and Screen Gems’, a unit of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Underworld™. Underworld is a gripping contemporary tale of lethal battles, devious conspiracies and illicit love, all set against the backdrop of a bitter rivalry between two warring families – the Vampires and the Werewolves. Screen Gems will distribute Underworld in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Italy. Lakeshore Entertainment will distribute Underworld to the remaining international territories. Underworld will hit theaters in the U.S. and the U.K. September 19, 2003.
Underworld re-imagines Vampires as a secretive clan of modern, aristocratic sophisticates whose mortal enemies are the Werewolves, a shrewd gang of street thugs who prowl the city’s underbelly. The balance of power is upset when a beautiful young Vampire and a nascent Werewolf – deadly rivals for centuries – fall in love. Len Wiseman directs Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor, Serendipity) and Scott Speedman (Felicity, Dark Blue) in a fast-paced, modern-day tale of deadly action, ruthless intrigue and forbidden love, all set against the backdrop of an ancient feud between the two tribes in a timeless, Gothic metropolis.
Writing the comic book adaptation is Kris Oprisko, who is noted for his work adapting the video game Resident Evil, as well as other entertainment properties, into comic books. Art will be painstakingly done by Nick Postic and Nick Marinkovich, bringing an exciting blend of action and realistic portrayals to the page.
According to Jeff Mariotte, IDW Editor-in-Chief, “Underworld looks like a terrific movie, visually stunning and with some incredibly entertaining concepts behind it. It’s a treat for comic storytellers to get to play in such a rich sandbox.”
“We’re very excited to be partnering with IDW for Underworld,” stated Al Ovadia, executive vice president, Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “Their reputation for top quality comic books and graphic novels, both in terms of editorial content and production values, was a key reason why we chose them to develop the adaptation for this film.”
The Underworld movie adaptation will be a 48-page, prestige format one-shot, on sale in September with a cover price of $6.99.
