Future Comics Announce Freemind And Metallix Series

Posted: Monday, August 5

Dick Giordano, Bob Layton and David Michelinie have banded together to create an independent publishing company that may well change the way the comics industry does business.

This week, Bob Layton, co-founder and Editor-In-Chief of Future Comics, released the company’s plan for distribution and sale of their first monthly title FREEMIND.

“We are looking to change the order of things in the comics industry but we can’t create a grassroots movement without the support of the readers and the retailing community.

"After a full year of strategic planning, we have decided to bypass the usual systems and distribute our titles DIRECTLY to the public. Comic shops may participate in our exclusive retailers program by e-mailing us and requesting to be added to our monthly solicitation list. With their support, we will create profitable partnerships with those participating outlets, offering free, in-store appearances by creators, numerous merchandise rewards and deeper discounts for increased orders.

"Readers may order individual copies directly from us by logging on to: htpp://www.futurecomicsonline.com where they may use a variety of payment methods to make their purchases each month,” says Layton.

"FUTUREPHASE ONE is currently available on the entertainment and preview website, where readers may order their monthly Future Comics directly from us.

"FUTUREPHASE TWO will begin August 7th with the opening of the Retailers‚ Secured E-Commerce site. We deliberately delayed the launching of the Retailers‚ site, until after the San Diego Con, in order to insure that all had equal time to make their purchases. The site will enable retailers to order our product in the most efficient manner.

"Future Comics will begin offering books for sale in the last week of August, beginning with FREEMIND #0, written by David Michelinie, pencilled by Dick Giordano and inked & co-plotted by Bob Layton.

"FREEMIND #0 will be offered at the reduced price of $2.25. (3.55 Canada)

"The ongoing, monthly series (which begins in October with #1) will contain 28 pages of art and story (in full color) for only $3.50.

"With issue #2, veteran illustrator Bob McLeod will take over as the regular penciller of the series. Dick Giordano will stay on as inker.

"Following FREEMIND, Future Comics‚ second regular series will launch in November with METALLIX #1.

"Metallix will be scripted by David Michelinie, penciled by Ron Lim and co-plotted and inked by Bob Layton.

"Altogether, the company plans to release four action titles by August of 2003."

Layton added, "FUTURE COMICS‚ target audience is the disenfranchised reader who longs for the return of solid storytelling with interesting, believable characters.

"With that in mind, we don’t want the Future Universe to grow larger than our ability to control the quality of every single issue. Therefore, David, Dick and I have agreed to keep our super-hero line down to four titles. However, another part of our business plan calls for a creator-owned line of books to be launched in 2003 under a separate house imprint. Dick Giordano will act as Editor-In-Chief of that line of titles."
