WLG #287: Thanksgiving Leftovers!
I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving here in the States, and to any of my international readers, well, I hope that you had a nice Thursday.
I’m still recovering from all the food that I ate and shopping that I did and appear to be suffering from a slight holiday hangover (though I didn’t drink much alcohol; I’m just hungover from the four days of eating/shopping/eating/shopping).
So my mind can’t take a lot this week, so here is a small selection of books that for me make up What Looks Good…
BLACKEST NIGHT: THE FLASH #1 (OF 3) $2.99 (Geoff Johns / Scott Kolins)BLACKEST NIGHT: WONDER WOMAN #1 (OF 3) $2.99 (Greg Rucka / Nicola Scott)
As always, these are the obligatory selections from "Blackest Night", which almost begs the question, "what books will get Michael geeked after this event is over and done with?"
That, my friends, is too scary a question to fathom right now, so I won't. Suffice it to say that I don't look forward to that day because for me the end all, be all of the comics right now has everything to do with what is going on with the Green Lantern Corps.
True story.
First we have Blackest Night: Flash which excites me to no end. Though I have never been a Flash die-hard whenever Geoff Johns is writing the character I am happy with the results. Also, let's face it, if this whole event is about a personification of Death getting all peeved at the fact that heroes keep dying and coming back to life, well, it makes sense that he and the Black Lanterns would go after Barry Allen. The guy just returned from death.
or did he?
We saw him die in Crisis on Infinite Earths, or at least it appeared as such, but now we know that as the Flash he was shifting through space/time/reality, so who knows if he actually ever really died. Either way, if I was Death I would be pissed and I would want him back as well. Just sayin'.
Also, I am curious about the return of this Reverse Flash. I am familiar with Zoom/Hunter Zolomon and really enjoyed the character; basically any time he showed up it was a lock that I would buy the issue in question. However, is this the same guy? I haven't been following the Flash very closely, so I don't know if Zoom passed on at some point or not.
For all I know it could be Professor Zoom, who I admit that I know nothing about (but I plan on fixing that with a quick Wiki search); I think that seems much more likely that it being "the Rival" as the latter appears to have a costume much more like Jay Garrick, and judging by this cover it would appear to be either Prof. Zoom or Zoom.
Either way, I'm intrigued and mentally salivating.
Normally I wouldn't be so geeked about Wonder Woman (she's just not my style), but Greg Rucka has proven time and again that he knows how to write strong female characters (just check out Whiteout, Whiteout: Melt, or Queen and Country for a few examples); that right there is enough to get me all geeked. The fact that an undead Maxwell Lord is showing up just compels me to buy the comic that much more.I first got into comics in the late 80s and Justice League was one of my early favorite superhero comics (I started out reading "war monger" titles as a friend put it, namely anything with the Punisher or Wolverine, and all of the G.I. Joe titles). Maxwell Lord showed up then to create the new JL (later JLI, later JLA and JLE, etc., etc.) and I was a fan of all of his and the team's adventures since. When he showed up during Infinite Crisis I was surprised to see him cast as the villain, especially when he shot Blue Beetle in the head. Of course, I was even more surprised to see him kill by Wonder Woman of all people, an act that was necessary, yet something that still weights heavily on her.
Getting the opportunity to see Wonder Woman face off against the man that she killed is definitely going to be a treat, and it will be all that much sweeter to have Greg Rucka writing.
So yeah, I'm geeked.
ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #5 $3.99 (Brian Michael Bendis / David Lafuente)Oh yeah, this has been brewing and I am anxious to see how Bendis/Lafuente bring this story to a head as Spider-Man takes on the Ultimate Comics version of Mysterio.
I honestly don't have anything more to say other than JOY! JOY! JOY!
Bendis has been writing this character forever now and yet it is still as fun and as fresh as ever. What can I say, this is as solid a comic as it comes these days.
GOOD STUFF!
