Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2009

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes. I didn't score any sweet comics, but I did get In Me Own Words: The Autobiography of Bigfoot which was definitely good for a few laughs. My wife knows me, what can I say?

Thanks also for some of the trade/GN suggestions; I've got some books to check out.

But this week, well, let's check out What Looks Good...

DC

BLACKEST: NIGHT SUPERMAN #3 (OF 3) $2.99 (James Robinson / Eddy Barrows)

Yes, this is the obligatory "Blackest Night" mention this week, but come, it's Superman from Earth-1 taking on Superman from Earth-2 (albeit, resurrected by the power of the Black Lantern).

How awesome is that?

Answer: very awesome.

'Nuff said.

MARVEL

DARK AVENGERS #10 $3.99 (Brian Michael Bendis / Mike Deodato)

Though I REALLY hate to admit it because it's a $3.99 book, I really do like Dark Avengers, but all along I've been wondering "Norman Osborn always cracks eventually, right?"

Well, comic book history seems to back me on that, so it's only a matter of time before her finally reveals how evil he truly is. Could this finally be the issue? I ask, because here's the official solicitation from Marvel:
Oh hey, you know how Norman Osborn was once the Green Goblin but he got it under control and now he’s one of the most powerful people in the free world? Oh, and you know that whole thing about him being a ticking time bomb who could snap at any minute? Yeah... you might want to check this issue out. The smash hit of the year continues!!
The title is less than a year old, so I doubt he's finally going to lose it, but part of the fun of this book is that these are NOT good guys; they're all villains, and for the most part they're doing these "heroic deeds" for selfish reasons, whether it be exoneration, money, or pure ego. There's always the potential for the wheels to fall off of this car as it's racing down the road. There's so much potential for this book to be a glorious car wreck that I keep coming back for more.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #19 $3.99 (Matt Fraction / Salvador Larroca)

This book has been nothing short of excellent over the last few months, so much so that I am already hoping that they collect this arc into a trade paperback. Will ultimately reach the status of "classic story" like the "Armor Wars" or "Demon in a Bottle"? Only time will tell, but for this has been a game-changing run for this creative team and I have loved every minute of it.

In case you haven't been following along here's a very brief rundown: Tony Stark became the head of SHIELD following the "Civil War" event, but this was soon followed by the "Secret Invasion" by the Skrulls, and Tony was ultimately blamed for the invasion because of said running of SHIELD. Norman Osborn positioned himself into a position of power and picked up the reigns of SHIELD's successor: HAMMER. Tony was now a wanted man, but mostly because Osborn wanted access to all of Tony's wonderful toys. So, Tony has been on the run ever since with his post dangerous asset: his mind.

This here is the final issue of the arc, and honestly, I have no idea where they're going to go with the book, but I am have had such a great ride on the trip so far I fully trust Fiction/Larocca to give up the good.

GREAT STUFF!
