Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2009

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

It is a VERY small week for me this week kiddos; I hemmed and hawed, hemmed and hawed, but really, when it came down to it there was just ONE book this week that got me excited. Sure, there are a couple of others I might check out, but for me, well, this is What Looks Good...

DC

BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN #1 (OF 3) $2.99 (James Robinson / Eddy Barrows)

What's this, Superman as a Black Lantern?

Well, yes, and no.

No, this is not the Superman that you know and love, that is, unless you've been reading comics since the Golden Age, in which case, yes, this is the Superman you know and love. For us that have been reading comics for the last 20 years (or less), this guy is better known to us as the Superman of Earth-2 (aka Kal-L). This is the same guy, who with Lois Lane, Superboy Prime, and Alex Luthor, stepped into the void at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Only, it turned out to NOT be a void, but rather a small pocket dimension where those inside could still see what was happening in the one unified DC Universe that had formed after all of the remaining universes merged into one.

Got it?

And then later he decided that there was too much wrong going on in the DC Universe so this Superman punched his way out of the pocket dimension so that he could help set things right. Only, he didn't realize that Alex and Superboy Prime decided to hook up with the Anti-Monitor in order to try to bring their universe back.

In the end Superman (well, the Supermen) helped to save the day, but this particular version of Superman died, partially of a broken heart as his own Louis had shuffled out of her mortal coil soon after coming to the DC Universe.

But, now he's back as a Black Lantern.

That's not good; after all, he's basically Superman, just a bit older, wiser, and probably a bit craftier. In addition to that he now has a Black Lantern ring.

And why is he at the grave of Jonathan Kent? Technically that is not his stepfather, so who knows?

Things are going to get messy and I can't wait to find out how.

What comics did you get geeked out about this week? Just stop by the WLG message boards (see link below) and share!

FYI: I will be in Mexico next week on vacation (yay me!) so I won't be doing a column; yes, I know you get a reprieve from all of this Blackest Night stuff. I am working on getting someone to fill in for me so that way you don't have to miss out on any comic book love

See you in two weeks!

Peace!

-Diaz
