Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2009

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

You got picks, and I got picks, so let’s cut the chatter and see What Looks Good

DC

AUTHORITY #13 $2.99 (Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning / Simon Coleby)

Kaizen Gamorra was dead.

And then he wasn't.

And then he was again.

I think that time The Midnighter drove the Carrier threw the "storm door" shield over the island.

But, he later he wasn't dead.

And then he was again.

And now he's back and controls almost all of the functioning technology on Earth with his sights set clearly on the Carrier and the Authority.

He was always a formidable, if overused, opponent, and with the team not up to 100% he's surely more than a handful.

GOOD.

Curious, though: why does Angie/The Engineer wear a t-shirt now? Is it to cover something up, because if it's trying to cover what it's trying to cover, well, then shouldn't she be wearing pants too?

Just sayin'....

MARVEL

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #16 $2.99 (Matt Fraction / Salvador Larroca)

Other than Green Lanterns and the "Blackest Night" event about the only other thing right now in comics that is really getting my geek blood pumping is this book by Fraction and Larroca. Sure, there are other things that I am geeking about from week to week, but I cherish these issues of Invincible Iron Man when they come out each month.

Let's face it, the draw for Iron Man for a long time has been that Tony Stark is one of the smartest, most brilliant minds on the planet and he was using his weapons technology for the greater good. He's not Thor, a freaking god, or a Hulk, a massively strong behemoth. Heck, he's not even Hawkeye, a dude that is unnaturally gifted with a bow and arrow. Physically, there's nothing all that impressive about Tony Stark.

Except, of course, his brain.

Here's a guy that stands shoulder to shoulder with Captain America of all people because of an awesome piece of technology that he came up with in his mind; he dreamed it up and made it so.

That's impressive.

But lately Tony has been on the run because he has been made the fall guy for the entire "Secret War" thing with the Skrulls sneaking past SHIELD and the Avengers.

On top of that, the thing that has made Tony who he is, his mind, is starting to fail him. True, Pepper Potts is now helping Tony with the use of the new "Rescue" armor, but it is purely defensive in its nature. So how long can a mouse avoid better and better mousetraps is that mouse is getting dumber and dumber?

This book has become a chase movie but with really only one foreseeable conclusion; yet, twists and turns keep popping up while Tony continues to spring and still avoid those mousetraps.

It's only a matter of time.

Or is it?

Like I said, I am LOVING This book right now.

IRON MAN: ARMOR WARS #1 (OF 4) $2.99 (Joe Caramagna / Craig Rouseau)

You can attribute this book to my geeky out on the previous Iron Man book. I know nothing of the creators and I don't think it has anything to do with the classic "Armor Wars" or the much less classic "Armor Wars II", but all the premise of all of Iron Man's past suits coming after him sounds at least fun.

I mean, seriously, how many of these suits of armor does the dude have?

How is he still a billionaire playboy if he's spending all this money on Iron Man armor and hidden safe houses around the world?

Anyway, like I said, the premise has grabbed my attention, so I'll check it out. Also note that it is one of those few Marvel ancillary titles that isn't $3.99. How did that happen?

OK, enough snark; I am a touch geeked, though.

See you next week!
