Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2009

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Three and out this week people; let's see What Looks Good...

DC

BLACKEST NIGHT: TALES OF THE CORPS #3 (OF 3) $3.99 (Geoff Johns & Peter J. Tomasi / Rags Morales, Chris Sprouse, Ivan Reis, Doug Mahnke, et al.)

Blah blah blah, you all know how much I am loving "Blackest Night" right now, so let's just call this one a given and move onto the other books this week, shall we?

I thought so...

WILDCATS #13 $2.99 (Christos Gage / Shawn Moll)

So the fractured Wildcats team recently finished taking on a clearly mad Majestic, who had gone off to create his version utopia in Hawaii while keeping Savant imprisoned. I won't go into that in case you're not caught up on what transpired, but you would think that just when you think the time would have time to lick their wounds and regroup Tao rears his head to attempt to finish them while their down.

Or is he?

Tao, if you're not familiar, is basically one of the smartest guys out there who also just happens to be a very powerful crime lord. He's been around for a long time, since when Alan Moore briefly wrote the Wildcats book, and even then he demonstrated how he could get people to do what he wanted (one if his first victims was Majestros; ironic that during that time they were both good guys and now they're both bad guys even though Tao was really bad the entire time).

Basically, you don't want to mess with Tao, and even if the Wildcats were at their prime he would be a worthy adversary.

Now?

Well, this can't be good, let's just say that.

WONDER WOMAN #34 $2.99 (Gail Simone / Aaron Lopresti)

I was never really a huge fan of Black Canary or the other "Birds of Prey"; in fact, the only real exposure I had to Black Canary was during some of the brief appearances in the 80's-era Giffen/DeMatteis run on Justice League. That said, a few years back I was hearing really good things about Gail Simone's work. When she was handed the reins of Birds of Prey I thought that I would check things out.

I loved it.

Like I said, I had no real affinity for any of the characters or the team, but Simone really has a great grasp on writing strong female characters that jump off of the page. I thoroughly enjoyed her entire run on Birds.... Eventually she left the book and Black Canary moved onto the Justice League of America and later Green Arrow & Black Canary. Tony Bedard took over Birds... and though his run was good, it just didn't grab me in the same way that Simone's had done (that shouldn't be taken as a sleight again Bedard; I absolutely loved the books he did for CrossGen before they collapsed, most especially The Negation and Negation War, but that's another topic).

Simone took over Wonder Woman several issues ago, and though I love her as a writer I've just never been that big of a Wonder Woman fan, so I never bothered to check things out. Lately I've been hearing quite a bit of buzz. Now I see that Black Canary is showing up to help Wonder Woman kick some tail.

Let me just see if I've got that right: Gail Simone, who I think did great things with Black Canary, is now writing Wonder Woman and getting plenty of good buzz.

How can I not check this out?

Looks GOOD!
