Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2009

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Comics: I love them.

And now, finally, after two year of waiting FINALLY the "Blackest Night" event is upon on us!

Why am I even writing an introduction, let’s dive right into What Looks Good

DC

BLACKEST NIGHT #1 (OF 8) $3.99 (Geoff Johns / Ivan Reis)

Yes.

YES.

YES!

Everything that I have been babbling about the last two years is finally here: BLACKEST NIGHT.

This, of course, means that we finally get to see members of the Black Lantern Corps, dead heroes and villains from all of DC history are going to be showing up.

Firestorm? Check.

Martian Manhunter? Check.

Aquaman? Check.

Ralph and Sue Dibny? Check.

Kal-L (Earth-2 Superman)? Check.

Oh, and Batman? CHECK!

I realize that if you're into this book you're going to be geeked this already, so really, there's nothing much more for me to say other than JOY!

Let the "Blackest Night" begin!

BLACKEST NIGHT: TALES OF THE CORPS #1 (OF 3) $3.99 (Geoff Johns & Peter Tomasi / Rags Morales, Chris Sprouse, Ivan Reis, Doug Mahnke, et al.)

Every once in a while when I am at a comic book convention I pick up older issues of Tales of the Green Lantern Corps when I can find them for cheap because I just love reading stories about various members of the Corps. This love stretches all the way back to my friend Mike Ring lending me Green Lantern Corps #200-224 in the late 80's; true, I like Hal Jordan, but for me there's much more appeal in members like Kilowog, John Stewart, Guy Guardner, and G'Nort (where has he been lately?). I can't really explain the appeal other than I think I just love the concept of an intergalactic police force more than just the adventures of a single Green Lantern. This also helps to explain the appeal of the "Sinestro Corps War" and "Blackest Night" events because the focus is on the entire GL Corps fighting against an adversary(s).

So of course I bought and consumed the Tales of the Sinestro Corps issues during the "Sinestro Corps War"; likewise, I plan on eating these up.

What makes this even more appealing to me is that there is so much I want to know about the various other corps of color; we've had a taste of most of them, but there's much we still don't know anything about the Indigo Tribe. These three weekly issues are going to shed some more light (pun not intended) on the other members of the various factions involved, or going to be involved, in the conflict that is "Blackest Night."

And yes, usually you see me rail against $3.99 comics, but DC is giving us extra pages; also, my obsession with all things "Lantern" right now make me a touch blind to the price increase, especially when this is everything that I've been wanting for at least two years.

GLEE!!!!

MARVEL

PUNISHER #7 $2.99 (Rick Remender / Tan Eng Huat)

Seeing as I've been focused on DC and characters coming back from the dead so much this week I figured something different like the Punisher would be a change of pace, what with The Hood bringing back villains that the Punisher has killed over the years.

Yeah, I'm being ironic.

But seriously, the Punisher has been a favorite of mine for 20+ years now, and closely tied to some of my first memories of Frank Castle and his reign of terror is one of the few characters to be a nemesis: Jigsaw.

I know Jigsaw has been dead for years now and I never really expected to see him again, but if that is really him back from the dead I couldn't be more geeked.

Awesome.

What comics did you get geeked out about this week? Just stop by the WLG message boards (see link below) and share!

See you next week!

Peace!
