WLG #266: The Creation of a DC Zombie?
Hey all!
Sorry about there being no WLG last week. I was out of town for the day job and unfortunately a replacement column couldn't be written in time for the Tuesday night deadline. Had I known ahead of time that there wasn't going to be a column I would have noted such, so I am sorry for that.
This week is a slim week for me, and on top of that it seems to be an all-DC week for me, which is kind of odd when you consider the fact that I have always considered myself to be a "Marvel Zombie"; and now, after all of these years I'm getting geeked by more and more DC books.
Interesting.
Anyway, without further adieu let's jump right into What Looks Good...as
BATMAN #688 $2.99 (Judd Winick / Mark Bagley)It's really no surprise that I am a Judd Winick acolyte and have been for many, many years now. From Exiles (especially the issue when Spider-Girl is separated from her lover), The Outsiders, Green Arrow, Green Arrow & Black Canary, Blood + Water and even Barry Ween I have pretty much consumed everything he has put out and loved a great deal of it, enough so that I have raved about it here as well. In my opinion there are few people out there that can write a better team book that Winick, and really, in his hands the books become less of a team book and more of a "family" book; the characters interact in markedly real and powerful ways.
This is why I feel that Winick is a GREAT fit for this book; true, there's a new Batman in town, but Batman, no matter who he is, should be all about family.
In my eyes this is a perfect fit.
GREEK STREET #1 $1.00 (Peter Milligan / Davide Gianfelice)Classic Greek tragedies played out by mere mortals on the seedy side of London? Well, color me interested, but Milligan has done some very creative stuff over the years, not the least of which were his runs on X-Force (later X-statix), X-Men, and a personal favorite of mine, Skreemer. Based on that pedigree I'm more than willing to check out his take on modern tellings of these Greek tragedies.
Sounds interesting.
GREEN LANTERN #43 $2.99 (Geoff Johns / Dough Mahnke)As I have noted dozens of times over the last couple of years I am absolutely LOVING everything that Johns and company are doing with the Green Lanterns and ever since the "Sinestro Corps War" I have been waiting for the "Blackest Night" event.
Well, it's finally here, as this issue is the official prologue to that event, so really, I have one thing to say: JOY!!!!!
Also, I love Mahnke's pencils, and they should fit NICELY with the dark tone that this book will soon be taking.
This is the comic book equivalent of Christmas Eve for me and I'm more than geeked, I'm giddy.
JOY!!!!
WEDNESDAY COMICS #1 $3.99 (various / various)Rather than try to explain what Wednesday Comics is I think I'll let DC's official description to the talking:
Wednesday Comics is unique in modern comics history: Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28" x 20" tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, with each feature on its own 14" x 20" page. It's certainly something different and I applaud DC for trying something new, so I figure it is worth at least checking out the first issue. I mean, how often does one see Neil Gaiman working with Mike Allred on a Metamorpho story? Or a Kurt Busiek Green Lantern tale?
Sounds like something worth checking out.
What comics did you get geeked out about this week? Just stop by the WLG message boards (see link below) and share!
See you next week!
Peace!
