WLG #260: Post FCBD Regret!

By Michael A. Diaz

Did everyone have a nice FCBD? Did anyone grab a copy of Blackest Night #0?

Not me, sadly. I was busy with much needed yard work and then the social obligations of a friend’s son’s birthday, so it wasn’t until the following day that I realized that I missed FCBD completely.

How sad for me.

And now I hear that issues of Blackest Night #0 are selling on eBay for beaucoup dinero.

Again, how sad for me.

Hopefully your FCBD was good, fun experience, much like I hope these new comics are this week. Speaking of which, let’s jump right into What Looks Good

DC

FLASH: REBIRTH #2 (OF 5) $2.99 (Geoff Johns / Ethan Van Sciver)

I am not a long-term fan of the Flash. In fact, my first real exposure to him was via Wally West in the late 80's. I may have mentioned this before, but when I first got into comics I was a complete Marvel Zombie. This was balanced by the fact that my fellow geek-in-crime Mike Ring (hi Ringo!) was all about DC comics. Whereas I was drooling over G.I. Joe, The Punisher, and Uncanny X-Men he had years of experience reading The Legion of Superheroes, Green Lantern, Kamandi, and The Flash. I remember borrowing a stack of The Flash during an arc where there was some kind of drug that made people run fast. Someone Wally was injected with some and he broke the sound barrier just sitting up straight. Then he took off only to be left powerless once the drug wore off.

But that was temporary.

Of course he eventually got his powers back and I have to admit that it was a lot of fun. I checked the character out now and then, and I have picked up various arcs over the years (for example, I loved the Dr. Zoom arc from a few years back). Yeah, I know that Wally was handed the mantel after Barry Allen died during "Crisis..." but that scene was not especially powerful for me for a long time because, well, I didn't read Crisis on Infinite Earths until just a couple of years ago.

I suck, I know.

That said it is obvious to me over the last 20+ years of reading and collecting comics that Barry dying was a big deal. But now he's back; what's up with that?

Personally, I am more curious to see what happens with Wally and his family. Will Wally still be The Flash as well, or will he retire?

I want to know more, and really, that's the hallmark of a well-written story, so consider me sufficiently geeked.

MARVEL

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #13 $2.99 (Matt Fraction / Salvador Larroca)

I am LOVING this book right now. It's always looked good due to Larroca's beautiful pencils, but man, Fraction knows how to right a good "on the chase" tale as well. Tony Stark is essentially a man on the run. He's like "The Fugitive" but just so happens to have an arsenal at his disposal.

Then you have Pepper Potts in her own suit of armor, trying to live up to the legacy of Iron Man. I love how the creative team has including elements of the movie yet done so without sacrificing the Iron Man continuity that came before.

It's all wonderful and makes for a fun, engaging read.

Right now this is my favorite comic that doesn't have the word "Green" in the title, and as of late that is really saying something.

NEW MUTANTS #1 $3.99 (Zeb Wells / Diogenes Neves)

This one is more of a curiosity for me. I admit that I liked seeing the former members of this team grown up. Some of them were teaching the next generation of heroes as instructors/counselors in New X-Men/Young X-Men; likewise, I mentioned years back that I was happy to see Cannonball graduated to the ranks of one of the main X-Men teams.

So what's this book? They're not children anymore, and yet, they're a team? Technically, wouldn't that make them X-Men then?

But they're not?

I'm confused, but still, interested. I think I'll check this out...
