WLG #256: Hey, Jealousy!
By Michael A. Diaz I had quite a pile of comic books to catch up last week (something I'm actually still doing) but the one thing that I was sure to do was to catch the two backup stories in the WildStorm books that featured the "Team Achilles" group from StormWatch.
For those not in the know StormWatch: Team Achilles was a comic about normal humans taking on super-powered beings. Previous to that the approach in the WildStorm Universe was for people with powers to take on other people with powers, only one side was "good" and the other side was "bad." After the destruction of the second Skywatch station the U.N. decided to disband StormWatch seeing as they were so very expensive. However, more super-powered threats eventually revealed themselves and the world found itself without sanctioned protection. Yes, there was The Authority out there to save the world, but they were masters unto themselves. The U.N. wanted a group that they had at least some control over, and thus the creation of the "Team Achilles" team. Originally the team was almost all normal human soldiers, but slowly over the course of the book more and more super-powered beings integrated into the team, not the least of which was "Flint", who thought of herself as the sole survivor of the previous incarnation of StormWatch.
Ultimately the team ended up trapped on an alternate Earth and the final issue of the series was never published because of low sales and an issue with the writer of book not really being who he said he was.
That was years back and I've always wanted a resolution to the story and I never thought that I was ever going to get one.
And now, thanks to Christos Gage and WildStorm, I have one. Kind of. Or rather, a continuation of the story in a form.
All that I know is that I am VERY happy now.
But enough about my WildStorm love, let's see What Looks Good...
DC
BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL #2 (OF 3) $3.99 (Tony Daniel / Tony Daniel)
With Batman gone Gotham is in need of a savior.
Bad.
Nightwing and many of Batman's old allies have banded together in an attempt to fill the void that Batman's absence has left behind, and even though there are many of them, there are still big boots to fill.
Yet, there appears to be someone trying to fill those boots all on their own, someone pretending to be the Batman.
But who?
Is this one of of Batman's old allies, or someone completely new?
The mystery is still unraveling but I am really enjoying watching it unfold.
GREEN LANTERN #39 $2.99 (Geoff Johns / Phillip Tan)
Yeah, I know you're used to be raving about this book, and here's some more.
Over the last few months (years?) Geoff Johns has been slowly revealing the different colored lanterns and their corresponding rings. Obviously the Green Lanterns are nothing new, nor are the yellow power rings of the Sinestro Corps (Fear). But recently we've met the new Red Lanterns (Rage), who appear to be opposed to both the Green and the Yellow, and now the Blue Lanterns (Hope) who are obviously aligned with the Green Lanterns as they are able to use their batteries and their powers to recharge the Green Lanterns (making them the antithesis of the Red Lanterns, whose powers seem to be able to quickly sap the charge from the Green rings). Also along the way we've found that the Zamarons have their own power battery for violet energy (Love), and though sometimes their goals align them with the Green Lanterns such is not always the case (though it would appear that the Zamarons would naturally be enemies with the Yellow and Red Lanterns).
It's been hinted at over the last several issues, but now with this issue we finally get to meet Agent Orange, who wield the Orange Lantern ring (Avarice). We saw previously that the Controllers seem to have harnessed the power of the orange light, which really makes all kinds of sense. The Controllers were once the same race of beings as the Oans (the beings that have given the Green Lanterns their power), but many a millenia ago they split off due to a difference in philosophy. Whereas the Oans believe that they should use their agents and their powers to contain evil, the Contollers believe they should use the same to destroy evil. Though the Oans have been fairly successful, the same can't be said of the Controllers, who have in the past used the Manhunters and the Darkstars as their agents, the former of which seem to have their own agenda now and the latter is for all intents and purposes seems to now be defunct. Like I said, the Oans have had their time on the intergalactic stage, whereas the Controllers have not had the same kind of success, so it almost makes sense that they would be jealous, would display avarice, toward the Oans.
I would almost think that in some instances the Green and the Orange might have similar objectives, but considering that avarice isn't a good thing, I am forced to think that the Orange Lanterns will be at odds with the Green, though, if truly agents of the Controllers, the Orange would most likely also be natural enemies to the Yellow and Red Lanterns. That's just my guess; who knows if the power of the orange light may have warped the Controllers.
That's why I am so geeked about this book because FINALLY I get to find out about this new faction entering into the war of light.
Can't wait!
What comics did you get geeked out about this week? Just stop by the WLG message boards (see link below) and share!
See you next week!
Peace!
