Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2009

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Another week, another selection of comics for me to get geeked out about! Let’s see What Looks Good

DC

BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL #1 (OF 3) $3.99 (Tony Daniel / Tony Daniel)

I fully believe that Bruce Wayne/Batman is going to be back. Sure, things change in comics from time to time, but Batman has left and come back once before. Oliver Queen died and came back. Hal Jordan became evil, reignited the sun, died, became The Spectre, was reincarnated, and is now a Green Lantern again. Heck, even Superman has died and come back. So yeah, I think Batman will be back as the guy we know and love.

But for now Gotham is without her hero, her protector, and some of Batman's friends and allies are going to try to fill in his boots, or, really, cowl, as the title suggests.

I'm curious, what can I say?

So who do we have fighting for it? Nightwing, Robin, The Huntress, Batwoman, Catwoman, and maybe some others, like perhaps Jason Todd.

Plus, that cover is just striking and has really pulled me into the series.

Also: though one might think that I would object to this book because of the $3.99 price tag because of my ranting about the rise in comic book prices, but I'm not. Why? Well, this is a 40-page book, so in this case the $3.99 is getting me extra story.

I'm all about the value.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #34 $2.99 (Peter Tomasi / Pat Gleason)

The Sinestro Corps has fragmented; whereas a couple of years ago they were a worthy and powerful foe of the Green Lantern Corps, now they are breaking apart. One the one side, you've got Mongul, a man that is already about as strong as Superman normally, but who now finds himself with a yellow power ring of the Sinestro Corps. Instead of just becoming a rank and file member of the Corps Mongul being Mongul has decided that he is going to lead the Sinestro Corps. Not that he wants to lead it, but simply that he has decided that he will be the leader and use the group as his own personal army to carry out his desires. Using brute force he has forced many Corps members to make him their leader.

But not all of them.

Sinestro is still around and leads what remains of the Corps after their loss during the Sinestro Corps War. Most of the members are still loyal to Sinestro, chief of which is Arkillo, the "Kilowog of the Sinestro Corps" as Geoff Johns has called him. In short, Arkillo is no pushover, so once he finds out that there is someone else trying to lead the Corps (namely, Mongul), he makes it his mission to remove this usurper from the ranks and solidify Sinestro as its leader.

But can he?

The War of Light is coming and things are really starting to ramp up now; yeah, I mention this book from month and month, and it has been a solidly good book for months now, but now, things are REALLY starting to get interesting. In my opinion, this is where it's at right now in comics.

'Nuff said.

MARVEL

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #11 $2.99 (Matt Fraction / Salvador Larroca)

I've followed Iron Man off and on for years, the longest stretch right at the end of the "Armor Wars" when he moved from the Silver Centurion suit back to a more classic Red/Gold suit again, and then all the way through much of JRJR's run. Over time I have drifted back in and out of the fold, collecting the book when Tony Stark became the Secretary of State, and then dropping it for a while, then I came back for Warren Ellis's run, then drifted away, and then came back again for Invincible Iron Man. I've liked the title from the first issue, but the last issue really kind of blew my mind. I mean, of course I knew of Pepper Potts, but I never knew, well, I don't want to give any spoilers away, but let's just say it was a direction for the book that I really didn't anticipate happening even though something LIKE this has happened in the past.

Let me just say that the ending was so good, and such a surprise, that I can't WAIT to tear through this issue.

Good stuff!
