WLG #249: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

By Michael A. Diaz

SMALL week this week for me, so I am just going to jump right into What Looks Good

DC

STORMWATCH: PHD #19 $2.99 (Ian Edginton / Leandro Fernández)

This is a continuation of the story that is taking place between this book and in the last issue of The Authority.

Listen, if you've been following the WildStorm Universe the last couple of years there's a good chance that you are probably already reading and enjoying this book. I know that I am.

We'll just lump this into the group of books that I seem to geek out about almost by default and I'm sure you're all sick of hearing about, you know, like Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, The Authority, and of course, this book, StormWatch: PHD.

DYNAMO 5 #0 $0.99 (Jay Faerber / Mahmud A. Asrar)

OK, now I am excited.

I've been following both Faerber's Noble Causes and Dynamo 5 since day one and have thoroughly enjoyed them both, but I admit that for a while there I kind of got behind on Dynamo 5. It's one of those books that I looked at one day and said "what happened? I know I have all the issues, but somehow I've gotten behind on my reading and I need to catch up."

Maybe Faerber heard my thoughts because here is a zero-issue at only $0.99, with a text "how we got to this point" section.

PERFECT.

I can't wait to read it and find out what I've been missing, and perhaps you as well.

Why should you check it out? Well, here's the premise: imagine a world with a Superman archetype and a Lois archetype. As you'd expect they meet, fall in love, and get married. The only problem is that this hero isn't quite as perfect as the Superman we know and love. Oh, he might love the woman he married, but being the celebrity that he is, well, he found temptation hard to resist. And now just once, or twice, but several times.

So, over the years this Superman-esque character fathered several illegitimate children, each of wish was imbued with one of his amazing powers. Whereas this hero was super-strong, could fly, had heat-vision, etc., etc., one of his children can fly, another is strong, and you get the picture. He passes on, but his loving wife, not a complete idiot and inquisitive, locates five of these children and forms them into a team to take up their father's stead.

This is solid series and I'm sorry that I ever let myself get behind. I plan on changing that this week.

MARVEL

DARK AVENGERS #2 $3.99 (Brian Michael Bendis / Mike Deodato)

Yeah, I'm torn on this book.

I picked up the first issue and quite liked it. I figured "well, it's the first issue, maybe Marvel is going to reduce that price with subsequent issues..."

OK, maybe I didn't figure that, but I HOPED that. If you're not a stranger to this column I've been ranting (whining?) about the jump in price to $3.99 for a single comic. I don't think prices need to jump up that high and I want to take a stand.

That first issue was good though, and though I really would like to read it I think I'm going to have to stick to my guns this time and say "no." I think that it's safe to say that this being another "Avengers" book that marvel will collect it fairly quickly and I can pick it up at a better price in a collected form in just a few months.

So, yeah, I am geeked about this book, but I have to choose my battles. I hadn't planned on getting the Bishop book a couple of weeks ago, but gave into the realization that the art was by Larry Stroman. I wish I hadn't given in, but I did.

If I'm serious about not supporting $3.99 books I have to FINALLY make a stand. Yeah, it's going to hurt me (and my obsessive-collector mentality), but I have to let this one go.

Oh, I almost didn't mention the most important thing: why did i like the book. Well, seeing Norman Osborn take over the names of well-known heroes as if they are intellectual property in a corporate takeover was a brilliantly evil thing to witness. It was a breath of fresh air. Sure, we've seen bad guys as heroes before (like Marvel's own Thunderbolts), but this was different. Like I said, it was like a corporate raider overlooking the assets that he now controlled.
