WLG #217: Serenity Now!
By Michael A. Diaz It’s later than I would like it to be (because in many way dogs are just like children), so instead of a long, drawn out introduction I am just going to jump right into What Looks Good…
DARK HORSE COMICS
SERENITY: BETTER DAYS #1 (OF 3) $2.99 (Joss Whedon & Brett Matthews / Will Conrad)
Yes, I am what one (not me, but someone) would call a "Browncoat", a die hard Firefly/Serenity fan. I am not sure how many of you knew this, but the truth is now out there in the open.
The sad thing is that I missed the show when it first came out on FOX. I had thought about watching it, but just never got around to it, and then, before I knew it, it was gone. Long gone.
I am not a typical (or stereotypical) Whedon fan. I never got into Angel or Buffy much. I think I downloaded (sinner!) and watched the first season of Buffy a few years back, and I thought it was pretty good, but it wasn't enough to grab me. That said, "Once More With Feeling" from season five is one of my favorite episodes of any TV show. Heck, I even have the soundtrack. Again, that's kind of weird, for as I said, I am not a huge Buffy fan, nor or musicals really. Still, that was one thing from Whedon that I really loved.
Some time after Firefly ended I heard people telling me good it was. So, one day, long after it had come out, I watched the movie Serenity to see what all the hype was about. I enjoyed the movie, but just thought that it was "OK."
I guess I didn't "get" all of it; there were too many questions in my head.
Then, I think it was last summer, Target put the entire Firefly series on sale for something like $17.99. I remembered liking the movie but had those questions, so I picked the collection up. I was fully expecting to be disappointed by the hype, but by the end of the second episode I was literally laughing out loud.
That's all it took and I was sold.
Now when I can watch Serenity over and over and over.
I know that all of the above doesn't say very much about this book, but rather, it DOES explain why I am so geeked about it. I would LOVE to see Firefly / Serenity come back in some form on either the big or the small screen, but I don't see that happening any time soon. So, for now, this is going to have to fill that void.
Also, apparently I am a "shipper" and I REALLY must know if anything ever happens between Mal and Inara.
Yes, I am a HUGE geek, through and through. No apologies, though. I LOVE being this way.
DC
GREEN ARROW / BLACK CANARY #6 $2.99 (Judd Winick / Cliff Chiang)
I like that this title is moving forward again. Don't get me wrong, everything that has been happening since day one has been FAR from boring, that's for sure, but I was ALMOST worried there that the series was going to get TOO hung up on how Ollie is going to save his son. Rather, it would appear that they are going to make that story a subplot for the series as it continues forth.
Good.
And that's what I love about this book. I've said it so many times that I am sure that I sound like a broken record, but Winick really writes a great "family" book, because that's what these characters - Ollie, Connor, Speedy, Black Canary, and Red Arrow - are, a family.
Personally, I wouldn't want it any other way.
GREEN LANTERN CORPS #22 $2.99 (Sterling Gates / Nelson)
A part of me wants to just copy and past what I said about Green Lantern last week, because really, it applies here as well. What we're seeing here is the basis for what is coming in the future, both for the GLC but the entire DC Universe as a whole. We're seeing the various different Lanterns start to appear, like in this issue with the Alpha Lanterns (basically an internal affairs division of the GLC), but also other types, like the Red Lanterns.
We're sure to see more and more show up; in fact, it would seem from that cover that there's a chance that the Purple power rings might be making an appearance.
The beginning of the end is starting here and I am LOVING every minute of it.
JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL HC $24.99 (Keith Giffen & J.M. DeMatteis / Kevin Maguire)
THIS is the Justice League as I know and love them. Yes, I realize that the League was around for a long time well before this, but for me THIS is where it all began.
DROOL.
DROOL.
DROOL..
'Nuff said.
