Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2008

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Pick of the Week – Green Arrow/Black Canary #4; Welcome to What Looks Good!Boy, was I wrong.

For those of you that frequent the message boards this won't be anything new, but I just wanted to take a second here at the beginning of this column to say that I was WAY wrong to be even just a TOUCH concerned about the finale of Y: The Last Man. I could go on an ooze forth about how much I loved it, but instead I'll just say that my reasons for concern were unfounded and as far as I am concerned it was a PERFECT end to an amazing comic book. The series was full of twists, turns, poignant moments, and interesting commentaries on society. This last issue was no different.

Perfection.

Absolute Perfection.

I'm sad to see it go.

/sigh.

Now this:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset. It is a VERY small week for me this week, so I'm just going to jump right into it and babble about What Looks Good...

DC

DETECTIVE COMICS #841 $2.99 (Paul Dini / Dusting Nguyen)

I think that I've addressed my fanboy mancrush for everything and all that Dustin Nguyen does. Last month I neglected to mention this comic because I had somehow MISSED that it was the new book that Nguyen was working on.

Shame on me.

Well, that was just a taste, and with this issue the creative team is launching full steam into their run.

AWESOME.

I realize that there are those out there that might not like Nguyen's version of Batman (which is fine; they're wrong, but that's fine) but in my opinion his version is spot on and somewhat disturbing, unsettling even. After all, isn't that how Batman is SUPPOSED to come across?

WILDSTORM: REVELATIONS #3 (OF 6) $2.99 (Scott Beatty & Christos Gage / Wes Craig)

I was skimming through the new release this week when I was ready to skip this one by when is saw mention of Backlash.

Better yet was mention of the original Backlash, Marc Slayton.

Again, confession time: I am a HUGE Backlash fan. I don't know why. His old comic wasn't particularly awesome, and in some ways it represented some of the things that were bad about comics in the 90's, but I loved it just the same.

LOVED it.

Now if only they had gotten Brett Booth to draw this issue. That's not a slam on Wes Craig, it's more of my nostalgia for the original Backlash hitting me as for my money no one did Backlash better.

That's all!

Again, it was kind of a light week for me, which really, is fine. See, I just bought a 50” TV this week (it hasn't been delivered yet) and I could use the break, or rather, my wallet could.

Was there anything that looked good to you this week? Your thoughts on anything else to do with comics? Share them! Just check out theWhat Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spread the love, my friend, spread the love.

Until then,

Peace!

-Diaz
