WLG #199: Strobe Lights, Smoke Machines, and Mucus

By Michael A. Diaz

Pick of the Week – ALIENS Omnibus Vol. 1 ; Welcome to What Looks Good!Super short week this week, so I'm not going to fart around too long on an opening but instead just jump right into the meat of things.

First this, of course:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset.I do have ONE question, though: did anyone see the new Fantastic Four movie, and if so, what did you think?

Personally I thought that the first movie was a stinker, so I have had no real desire to see this movie. Sure, the Silver Surfer looks pretty sweet, but that's special effects for you.

My brothers saw it and say that it was pretty good, but I don't know, I really did not like the first movie at all.

What did YOU think? Hit the message boards (link below) and share your opinion.

Now, let's check out What Looks Good...

GARTH ENNIS CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD #4 (OF 6) (MR) $3.99 (Garth Ennis / Jacen Burrows)

This book is NOT intended for all audiences.

I don't want to give too much away about this book, but basically it is a book about two sons that are friends that both happen to have powerful fathers that want them to aspire to lofty positions as well. Of course, one of them is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, and the other is the Anti-Christ. The thing is, neither of them want to necessarily be pawns in the plans of their respective fathers, so they've decided to take a different path. This path include for some reason a road trip through Heaven (last issue) and then through Hell (this issue).

Unorthodox? Certainly.

Blasphemous? Most likely.

Entertaining? Hell yeah!

Like I said, this most likely isn't going to be everyone's cup of tee, but for me this is the bee's knees.

LOVE this book. As lolcats say: DO WANT!

DARK HORSE

ALIENS OMNIBUS VOL 1 TP $24.95 (Mark Verheiden / Various)

DROOL!

DROOL!

DROOL!

Seriously, why isn't SOMEONE doing something interesting with the Aliens license? It is certainly possible, I mean, just look at this collection here!

For those of you not in the know, Dark Horse started out small, much smaller than they are today, and one of the things that they did in those early days was some licensed work, namely the first Aliens mini-series, which was originally done in black and white. When it first came out the book was a nice continuation of the second movie in the series. Of course, Alien 3 came along and changed all that, requiring some name changes for the major characters.

I have those original black and white issues and would love to dig them up again. Long ago there were actually worth some money. I am not sure if that is still the case now, but seeing this come out, well, I would LOVE to reread the mini-series in color. Now THAT would be nice.

Also included in here is the second, painted color mini-series that is just BEAUTIFUL to behold. To this day I am still struck by the art and craft that went into that second mini-series. If you like comics and/or the Aliens franchise you MUST get this book.

Lastly, this also contains some of Sam Keith's early work. Initially I did not like the third mini-series (at the time called “Earth War”) as much as the second, but as the book carried on I thought that there were plenty of clever ideas, including some things that I wished had been carried over into the Aliens canon, like the “Royal Guard” aliens on the home world.

Yes, I am a comic book and an Aliens geek and this just pleases me to no end.

Thank you, Dark Horse, thank you!

DC

EX MACHINA #29 (MR) $2.99 (Brian K. Vaughan / Tony Harris)

This is the final issue of the “Power Down” story arc and there are plenty of questions that I am looking to have answered, not the least of which is “who in the heck is that old guy.”

Mind you, I have not heard any spoilers, but like I said last month if I were to bet I would say that the old guy is Mayor Hundred from the future. He has the same eyes, not to mention those implant-looking things on his head.

Good stuff, great book; you're reading it, right?

Was there something that did it for you this week? If so, stop by the What Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spread the love, my friend.

Until then,

Peace!
