WLG #174: Coughing Fits!

By Michael A. Diaz

Pick of the Week – Y: The Last Man #50; Welcome to What Looks Good! And what exactly is the hold up this week you might ask?

(Rolls the dice!)

Looks like a cold is a cause for this week's short column In fact, I was so ill that I actually called in sick to work on Monday. That may not seem like such a big deal to all of you, but calling sick is something that I rarely do. In fact, in the 16.75 years that I have been gainfully employed I can count on one hand how many times that I've actually called in sick: four. So, on average I call in sick about once every four years or so.

So all day Monday was spent napping, sneezing, coughing, occasionally interrupted by the occasional bowl of soup.

But my maladies don't mean anything to you. No, you're here to talk about what comics got you all geeked out this week, so let me insert this before I forget:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset. We're keeping it short and sweet again this week, because honestly there wasn't a whole lot out there that got me excited, which is good, because I'm still recuperating anyhow.

Let's jump into What Looks Good...

DC

BOYS #3 (MR) $2.99 (Garth Ennis / Darick Robertson)

Ultraviolence aimed at capes? So far I have to say that I am really enjoying this series and look forward to everything sick and wrong that I will encounter in this issue.

Oh yeah, so very sick and so very wrong, but oh so enjoyable!

MANIFEST ETERNITY #5 $2.99 (Scott Lobdell / Dustin Nguyen)

I'm not going to whine anymore about this book being canceled because for one there's not much that I can do about it, and 2.) I'm sure that you're sick of hearing me whine.

That said, I look at that cover and think of the excellent art that is going into each and every panel, every page of this book, because that is what this is: art. Most comics are have a guy doing pencils, another doing inks, and then usually yet another doing the colors. Not so with Manifest Eternity; this Nguyen through and through, doing everything and mixing in different media.

Yes, I am sorry that this book didn't grab more readers than it has but I love it still the same because in my opinion, for what's it worth, this truly is art.

Y: THE LAST MAN #50 (MR) $2.99 (Brian K. Vaughan / Pia Guerra)

Wow, 50 issues of Y: The Last Man and the book is still as good as ever. And to think, after this there are only 10 more issues left!

Well, it's been kept a secret this long but now after more than four years we, the readers, are about to find out exactly who/what caused the plague that killed all of the planet's males. Personally I've had a few theories here and there, and I am sure that there have been some red herrings thrown in for good measure as well, so I am very eager to see who/what has actually caused all of this destruction.

Also: what's up with Hero? I knew we see her from time to time but I had thought that by this point in the series she would have taken on a much more prominent role than she has. As a fan of this book I can say that she is perhaps the one character that I would like to see fleshed out just a touch more before the end comes. Well, her and Beth, Yorick's girlfriend, would be nice.

Still, this has been a heck of a ride with plenty of twists and turns to come before all is said and done.

MARVEL

CRIMINAL #1 (MR) $2.99 (Ed Brubaker / Sean Phillips)

Brubaker.

Phillips.

Crime.

Noir.

Uh, ever hear of a great little book called Sleeper?

OF COURSE I am buying this!

DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #1 (OF 5) $2.99 (Brian K. Vaughan / Marcos Martin)

I admit that I've never been much of a fan of Dr. Strange, but Vaughan's involvement on this title is more than enough to bring me around for the first issue but enough to make me salivate as well.

I'll all over it.

Was there something that did it for you this week? If so, stop by the What Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spread the love, my friend.

Until then,

Peace!
