We Lost Our Mark

By Donna Barr

This week we all lost a stalwart supporter of our art form, and a wonderful guy.

Mark Simpson, the soul of Nottingham, England's Page 45 comic shop, died suddenly and unexpectedly.

Mark brought Roberta Gregory and myself over to the shop in its early days. We were impressed by the bookstore atmosphere, and the eager optimism that Mark had instilled in everyone associated with his vision.

Mark never stopped working and pushing to provide access to readers to the best books in the market. And he was funny, and friendly, and could save your life with a cup of hot tea.

His influence will last -- but he will be missed.
