DO YOU KNOW?

By Mike Pellerito

Do you know?

When asked what the causality numbers would be from the attacks on the World Trade Center Mayor Giuliani replied “More than anyone can bear.” Today we are in a world where kids may have never lived or remember a lower Manhattan that wasn’t attacked. The same kids know a city, a country that came together and helped and worked together and became stronger. Kids need to see that strength to overcome. Even if that strength is in something as silly as a comic book.

125 miles per hour. That is the speed the World Trade Center buildings came crashing down. 10 seconds each for both towers to collapse. At the time it seemed like an eternity and it still seems like it was just yesterday. To think it was years ago is staggering. When realizing the audience for the books I edit where the youngest readers never knew or remember a world with the World Trade Center was disheartening.

It seems to be an annual occurrence to find a comic that can help kids deal with some the feelings that come up during the remembrances of the attacks on 9/11. That it is ok to be worried, to be scared and that no matter these feeling you can keep going on. Amelia Rules is just such a character and volume #3’s Superheroes is just the right book.

AMELIA RULES! SUPERHEROES
Amelia McBride is among the all time coolest female characters in comics. A vivid imagination a wicked wit guide this young through a series of difficult time against an army of ninjas, a secret historic origination of Steve’s (apparently they are all evil) and one of her best friends Trish is hiding a deeply held secret from her.

The whole story was cool and fun and silly. Despite a few pages dealing with some serious topics I was surprised, in a very good way on how this ended. The secret Trisha was hiding was more than just a silly secret, it has real importance. And suddenly at the end of the book you are left with a true feeling of dread that you may not get to see how this will play out. A little breaking of the fourth wall is done perfectly and we get a brief glimpse in to future of these characters.

Despite the serious topics, this is a fun and wonderful story. Amelia is something that kids of all ages can relate too, and is now a personal favorite.
