Mistakes And Mistletoe
Greatest Stocking stuffers ever?
Reading this column of course is a clear indication of your brilliance. Your are a discerning reader, looking for ways to expand your mind, or those of you family, friends and students with good age appropriate comics. You are a forward thinker realizing that the future of any industry is to encourage new growth. In comics that means young readers and All Ages material.
So if there is so much brilliance floating around could this mistake mentioned last Tuesday, a mistake in a previous column really is a mistake? Or is it just a test to see if anyone was paying attention?
Kidding aside, a column or two ago I made mention that Courtney Crumrin from Oni Press and Sabrina The Teenage Witch from Archie Comics were on the same level. Now if you read both or either you know that the quality of both comics are exceptional. However in term of content Sabrina is really perfect for All Ages, while Courtney Crumrin is more for the middle schooler and beyond.
It was a mistake and a pretty dumb one at that, and of course has been fixed. Charles who caught the lapse in judgment received the below email from yours truly:
Charles
Thanks so much for reading the column and writing in. I'll have to dig out that story, as I remembered it was more like the movie Lion King- where Simba (?) let Scar fall into the pack of Hyenas and get eaten rather than jumping in and helping him. If I remember correctly, Courtney let the monster get the guy, granted without remorse, but she herself didn't do the deed. I'll have to dig out that story and reread it. It didn't pop out at the time reading the Graphic Novel, but you do make a valid point regardless of this one scene.
At any rate in hindsight it was wrong to put the two comics, Sabrina and Courtney, in the same category of innocence, enjoyment certainly, but not content. If I can revise the revise column I will do so and put some thing in this weeks column correcting the misrepresentation. I'd like to make mention of your email and thank you in the upcoming Tuesday column. In hindsight rereading the column it was a misstep and worth the time to correct.
Thanks,
Mike
And Charles pointed out a bit of a spoiler so beware, but also pointed out as he put it
–“ one of those morally gray bits”:
Mike
If I remember correctly, Courtney let the monster get the guy, granted without remorse, but she herself didn't do the deed.
While she didn't _technically_ do the deed, she did bring Ol' Tommy Rawhead back from the dead and set everything up so the deed would occur - committing murder while technically keeping her hands free via monster, as the warlock himself did. One of those morally gray bits that Naifeh does oh-so-well!
Charles
So again, just wanted to thank Charles publicly, and apologize for the oversight.
Now on to more pleasant things, like All Ages comics. Archie is one of the few publishers that really embrace the holidays like few others. Regardless of religion or belief Archie delivers on the fun of the holidays and specifically Christmas.
At the time putting this collection of stories was quite an undertaking. One of the few times that full on arguments of what was the best Christmas stories could be allowed given the nature of the season. Every one has their favorites and probably one you have read before is in here. It has turned out to be one of Archie’s most popular collections, pulled out year after year in most families, just like the same crop of holiday movies we watched the year before and can’t wait to watch this year and next. Looking for a good stocking stuffer this is it.
