Really Should Be Reading Scripts Right Now
Don’t you remember being a kid and wanting to fly? Saving the world from an evil villain and the world cheers your name? Ever wish comics were more fun? Not just funny, but fun? A joke here, a quip there, an embarrassing situation popping up, is that too much to ask? Or how about just not overwhelming depressing, maybe even the heroes acting like heroes?
A lot of comics used to have some humor to them. It was common to add jokes, or a funny villain, some of it intentional, some of it just odd. If Batman were ever in a pink Bat-suit today readers would revolt. Well, that would probably be a bad idea, but the idea of super heroes is fairly hard to believe. Pink suits excluded. But here we are working harder than ever to make it seem believable, gritty and realistic instead of just having fun with character crying out to let loose.
We look at comics negatively, the glass half empty. And sales reflect that. The stories seem to focus on the negative of a super powered world. Once when comics were fun, looked at as if the glass was half full, every kid in America read comics. Now that comics are respectable, with material for kids and adults and producing some of the best quality ever, comics are depressing to the audience.
Certainly that is the philosophy behind Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic X, not to mention Teen Titans Go! (On sale this week) Justice League Unlimited, all the Marvel Adventures line, even Uncle Scrooge (Also on sale this week) has great funny, fun adventure.
Well Marvel listened to its fans who have saved the hero and brought back Amazing Spider-Girl. The first issue came out last week, and it is well worth your time and money. This has been a series that has been near cancellation several times, more so for the lack of understanding of what to do with it than the quality - which is fantastic. The story is simple: Spider-Man in the future is retired and his daughter has taken up the family Super Hero business. While this series is brand new it builds on the 100 plus run when it was known as just Spider-Girl. Not that any of that matters, Tom Defalco writes the story perfectly for new readers and old. With great art by Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema, that focuses just as much on storytelling as it does on looking good really makes for a fun comic read.
It really is great news that this book got a new chance to swing through the skies. It was nice to meet Tom Defalco at last February’s NY Comic Con. The news was fresh of the Spider-Girl comic being cancelled at #100. At the Archie booth we were talking with all of the big Archie bosses and yours truly suggested we should get the whole team over at Archie and use the Archie Super Heroes and have Fly-Girl comic. Of course the idea got a few interested glances. Too bad we couldn’t work it out. At least there’s a new Spider Girl series.
Anyway, the scripts for Sonic, Sonic X, Sabrina, Katy Keene and a handful of other projects are piling up. Some other cool projects, that look to be a lot of fun are on the horizon too. So, we’ll have to cut it a little early this week, there are some fun comics that need editing.
